Mary Wangechi Maina

Location
Kenya

Mary Wangechi Maina, a passionate innovator from Kenya, is revolutionizing the sustainable energy sector by giving lithium-ion batteries a second life. With a keen focus on environmental conservation and addressing electricity challenges in rural areas, Mary is dedicated to maximizing the potential of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries. These batteries, which still retain about 60% of their capacity, are often discarded, but Mary sees an opportunity to repurpose them for power storage in domestic settings.

Hailing from Nyandarua County, where electricity coverage is limited, Mary's vision is to combine these repurposed batteries with solar panels to provide reliable energy solutions for rural communities. By harnessing the power of these batteries before recycling or disposal, Mary aims to contribute to the fight against climate change and improve access to electricity in underserved areas. Mary Wangechi Maina is a trailblazer in the renewable energy space, committed to making a positive impact on both the environment and society.
