John Katumo, a Petrochemical Engineer from Kenya, is dedicated to combating climate change and energy poverty through the provision of clean energy solutions. As a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, John's passion lies in converting urban waste oils into clean jet fuels, engine fuels, and biofuels for cooking. His project not only offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels but also addresses the issue of waste oil disposal, promoting a cleaner environment.
With a vision to revolutionize the biofuel industry, John aims to integrate AI into biofuel production using micro-algae strains like Scenedesmus and Chlorella. His innovative approach includes Machine learning-informed semi-continuous algal cultivation (SAC) and aggregation-based sedimentation (ABS), paving the way for more efficient and cost-effective biofuel production.
Furthermore, John seeks to empower local communities by providing affordable clean biofuels for cooking, thereby alleviating energy poverty and reducing health risks associated with traditional fossil-based fuels. By cultivating alternative feedstocks like camelina and castor beans in arid regions of Kenya, John also aims to stimulate economic growth and create sustainable opportunities for these communities. John Katumo is a visionary leader committed to driving positive change through sustainable energy solutions.
